RedCap Leads 5G Applications into a New Stage

source:People's Post and Telegraph time:2024-01-26

5.5G, also known as 5G-Advanced (hereinafter referred to as "5G-A"), is the next stage of 5G development, surpassing existing 5G technologies in terms of speed, latency, connection scale, and energy consumption. Recently, Shandong Mobile has made breakthroughs in 5G-A technology, successfully realizing the landing and application of a new type of massive Internet of Things technology with high bandwidth, low cost, and low power consumption, leading the way into a new stage of 5G.

Stacking signals from multiple different frequency bands of 5G together can achieve the goal of increasing network bandwidth, thereby improving network capacity and data transmission rate. Shandong Mobile has completed multi carrier aggregation pilot projects in Qingdao, Jinan, Weihai and other places. Test data shows that the peak downlink speed exceeds 4Gbps, which is nearly four times higher than traditional 5G transmission speed. Users can enjoy faster and more stable network services, whether watching high-definition videos, playing online games, or using AR/VR applications, they can all have a high-speed experience.

Early 5G chip and terminal designs were complex and costly, limiting the widespread application of 5G technology. To solve this problem, a new type of massive Internet of Things technology - RedCap has emerged, which can reduce terminal costs and power consumption, and become a "catalyst" for the development of 5G application scale. Shandong Mobile has completed 5G RedCap scenario validation in cities such as Jinan and Qingdao, covering multiple industries such as manufacturing, power, and chemical engineering. It has developed applications for video monitoring and information collection, and achieved expected key indicators such as terminal cell residency, uplink speed, and latency.

Passive Internet of Things (PIoT) is a new connection method that does not require power and high power components, but drives its own circuit through available signals and energy around it, allowing for the connection of more devices without worrying about power and power consumption issues. Shandong Mobile has established a 5G-A PIoT innovation project model site in Qingdao. By deploying base station transceiver equipment and passive tags, it has successfully achieved core functions such as accurate inventory of materials, status updates within 1 minute of movement, and optimal resource matching. This provides the possibility for large-scale IoT applications, assisting in large-scale warehouse management, asset management and item tracking, and achieving a sense of everything.
